**MANILA, Philippines** — The Department of Health (DOH) has renewed its warning against leptospirosis as widespread flooding caused by the southwest monsoon, or **Habagat**, continues to expose communities to potentially contaminated floodwaters.

While the country has recorded fewer leptospirosis cases so far this year compared with the same period in 2025, health officials are closely watching for a possible rise following recent heavy rains and floods.

Latest DOH data cited in recent reports showed **5,486 leptospirosis cases from January 4 to August 26**, down 23 percent from the **7,163 cases recorded during the same period last year**. Despite the overall decline, the National Capital Region, Cagayan Valley, and Central Luzon remain among the areas with the highest number of reported cases.

## Floodwaters Can Carry a Hidden Danger

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease commonly associated with water or soil contaminated by the urine of infected animals, particularly rats. The bacteria can enter the body through breaks in the skin and other routes of exposure.

Health authorities have stressed that people should **not assume they are safe simply because they have no visible wounds**. The DOH has advised individuals who have been exposed to floodwaters to seek medical advice, rather than waiting for symptoms to worsen.

The warning comes as recent rains have driven increased concern over infections. Earlier reports noted a sharp rise in newly recorded cases over a two-week period, underscoring how quickly the health risk can change after widespread flooding.

## Hospitals Prepare as Admissions Rise

The government has also moved to strengthen hospital readiness as flood-related exposure increases.

The DOH has expanded hospital capacity and strengthened its referral system in preparation for a possible surge in patients. Reports this week also showed that DOH facilities have been managing increased leptospirosis admissions, particularly in Metro Manila.

In the Ilocos Region, health authorities have likewise warned residents to avoid unnecessary contact with floodwaters, especially as continued rains keep communities vulnerable to exposure. Regional surveillance reports have also documented cases and deaths linked to the disease, highlighting the potentially serious consequences of delayed treatment.

## What Should You Do After Wading Through Floodwater?

Health officials urge the public to take floodwater exposure seriously:

- **Avoid wading through floodwaters whenever possible.**
- **Wash thoroughly with clean water and soap after exposure.**
- **Protect cuts and wounds and avoid exposing them to potentially contaminated water.**
- **Seek medical advice promptly after significant floodwater exposure**, even if you initially feel well.
- **Do not self-medicate with antibiotics**; consult a healthcare professional about appropriate treatment or prevention.

Leptospirosis can initially resemble other illnesses, making early consultation important. Symptoms may include fever, headache, muscle pain, chills, and other flu-like signs, while severe cases can lead to serious complications.
