**DAVAO CITY, PHILIPPINES — After winning over consumers in Quezon City and Metro Manila, Davao's famous durian and other tropical fruits are now heading to new markets in Cebu, Bohol and Baguio as the government pushes to give local farmers more places to sell their harvests.**

The Department of Agriculture in Davao Region (DA-11) is expanding its **Kadiwa on Wheels** fruit caravan beyond Metro Manila, bringing fresh produce from Mindanao directly to consumers in major urban centres.

The latest rollout includes **durian, mangosteen, pomelo, lanzones and other Davao-grown fruits**, with the programme designed to create wider market opportunities for farmers while encouraging more Filipinos to enjoy local produce.

## 20 metric tons headed to Central Visayas

Following the successful Metro Manila leg, DA-11 said around **20 metric tons of Davao fruits** are being sent to Central Visayas.

The shipment was scheduled to leave Davao on **Sept. 8**, with selling activities set from **Sept. 10 to 16**. Philippine News Agency reporting said the Central Visayas rollout would include destinations in **Cebu and Bohol**.

The expansion marks another major step for Davao farmers looking beyond traditional local markets.

For consumers, it means more direct access to some of Mindanao's best-known fruits.

For farmers, it could mean something even more important:

**More buyers.**

**More demand.**

**And potentially better market opportunities for their harvests.**

## Metro Manila gives Davao fruits a warm welcome

The Kadiwa on Wheels programme first brought Davao fruits to the Department of Agriculture central office in **Quezon City from Sept. 1 to 3**.

The caravan then moved to **Kartilya ng Katipunan near Manila City Hall on Sept. 4**.

According to DA-Davao, consumers gave a positive reception to the fruits featured in the display and tasting activities, encouraging officials and farmers to continue expanding the programme to other cities.

DA-Davao Regional Executive Director **Macario Gonzaga** said consumer support outside Mindanao is important because every purchase helps create demand and opens wider markets for farmer-producers.

## Davao's famous fruits are going on a nationwide road trip

The Kadiwa on Wheels programme has lined up several major stops after Metro Manila.

### 🍈 Central Visayas

**Sept. 10 to 16**

Davao fruits are being brought closer to consumers in Cebu and other Central Visayas markets.

### 🍓 Baguio City

**Sept. 25 to 28**

The caravan will next bring Mindanao's tropical fruits to the country's famous mountain city.

### 🏙️ Pasay City

**Oct. 8 to 10**

Another major selling activity is scheduled at the **World Trade Center** in Pasay City.

The programme has a target volume of **70 metric tons**, according to DA-11.

## Why Davao farmers need more markets

The fruit caravan is about more than giving city residents a chance to buy fresh durian.

DA-11 has said farmers face continuing challenges involving **market access and low prices**, particularly when harvest volumes increase.

Earlier, DA-Davao said it was expanding the Kadiwa programme because farmers were worried about low prices and needed more outlets for their produce.

By bringing fruits directly to consumers in major population centres, the programme aims to reduce dependence on local markets and create additional demand.

The idea is simple:

**More markets can mean more opportunities to sell.**

And for farmers dealing with large harvests, finding buyers outside their immediate area can be critical.

## From Calinan farms to Filipino tables

The fruits featured in the caravan come from farmer-producers in Davao City, including farms in **Calinan District** and other fruit-producing areas.

An earlier shipment of approximately **25 metric tons** was sent to Metro Manila on Aug. 28.

The shipment included:

- Durian
- Mangosteen
- Pomelo
- Other locally grown fruits

The programme was launched from **Bago Oshiro in Tugbok District, Davao City**, before the produce was transported to markets outside Mindanao.

## The big push: Get Filipinos to eat more durian

One of the major goals behind the initiative is to increase domestic consumption of durian.

DA-Davao said current per-capita durian consumption stands at only around **0.66 kilograms**, suggesting there is significant room to expand the local market.

For Davao's durian industry, that means convincing more Filipinos to try — and eventually regularly buy — the fruit.

Farmer-producer **Eduard Cervantes** of La Prinsesa Agri Farm in Baguio District, Davao City, said increasing per-capita durian consumption has long been an aspiration for the industry.

The message behind the caravan is clear:

**Davao has the fruit.**

**Farmers have the supply.**

**Now the challenge is finding more consumers.**

## Kadiwa connects farmers directly with consumers

The broader Kadiwa programme is designed to establish stronger links between producers and consumers.

Instead of relying entirely on long and complicated marketing chains, farmers and producer groups are given more opportunities to reach buyers directly.

DA-11's Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division is using the programme to:

- Expand market access
- Strengthen market linkages
- Reach more consumers
- Create new selling opportunities
- Support farmer incomes
- Promote local agricultural products

Participating groups include the **Davao City Durian Industry Development Council** and the **Durian Industry Association of Davao City**.

## Davao fruit industry looks beyond Mindanao

The domestic market push also comes as Davao Region continues working to expand the reach of its agricultural products.

Recent government reports show Davao producers exploring and opening markets not only across the Philippines but overseas as well, with products including pineapples, bananas and cacao reaching international buyers.

But while exports remain important, DA-Davao's latest campaign highlights another major opportunity:

**The Philippine market itself.**

With millions of potential consumers in Metro Manila, Central Visayas and other major cities, domestic demand could provide farmers with another reliable outlet.

## Could Davao fruits become a regular sight in Cebu?

That is one of the bigger possibilities behind the programme.

If the Kadiwa rollout generates strong demand, Davao farmers could gain more opportunities to supply consumers outside Mindanao on a more regular basis.

The positive reception in Metro Manila is already being seen as an encouraging sign.

DA-Davao said the response from consumers showed that Davao's agricultural products have the potential to attract stronger demand in other parts of the country.

For Cebu consumers, the arrival of the caravan means a chance to buy fresh fruits sourced directly from Davao farmers.

For the producers, the bigger hope is that one successful caravan could eventually lead to lasting business relationships and stronger distribution networks.

## The bigger challenge: Preventing oversupply and low prices

Expanding market access is particularly important when farmers produce more than local markets can absorb.

When supply rises sharply while demand remains limited, prices can fall.

That can hurt farmers even when harvest volumes are high.

DA-11 previously said farmers had concerns about low prices and that increasing supply made the search for new markets more urgent.

The Kadiwa on Wheels programme is one response to that problem.

Rather than waiting for buyers to come to Davao, the fruits are being brought directly to consumers.

**From the farms.**

**Onto trucks.**

**Across regions.**

**And eventually onto Filipino tables.**

## What happens next?

The Davao fruit caravan is scheduled to continue its rollout in the coming weeks.

### 🚚 Central Visayas

Davao fruits are being delivered for selling activities from **Sept. 10 to 16**.

### 🏔️ Baguio City

The caravan is scheduled to arrive from **Sept. 25 to 28**.

### 🏙️ Pasay City

The programme will then head to the **World Trade Center from Oct. 8 to 10**.

The overall target is **70 metric tons of fruits** under the Kadiwa on Wheels initiative.

## The bottom line

After receiving a positive response in **Quezon City and Metro Manila**, Davao's Kadiwa on Wheels fruit caravan is expanding to new markets across the Philippines.

Around **20 metric tons of Davao fruits** are being sent to Central Visayas, with selling activities scheduled from **Sept. 10 to 16**, while future stops include **Baguio City from Sept. 25 to 28** and **Pasay City from Oct. 8 to 10**.

The fruits include Davao's world-famous **durian**, along with **mangosteen, pomelo, lanzones and other local produce**.

But behind the nationwide fruit caravan is a much bigger mission.

**Help farmers find more buyers.**

**Expand markets beyond Davao.**

**Reduce pressure from oversupply and low prices.**

**And get more Filipinos to discover what Mindanao farmers can produce.**

For Davao's fruit growers, the journey from farm to market is getting longer.

But that could be exactly what they need.

**Because Davao's fruits are no longer waiting for customers to come to them.**

**They're taking the fruits directly to the customers.**
