Huawei unveiled the **Mate XT2** on Monday, Sept. 7, an upgraded version of its flagship foldable that opens twice to transform from a conventional smartphone into a tablet-sized device. The launch comes as Xiaomi prepares to introduce its own new foldable and Apple gets ready for its latest major product unveiling, where the company is widely expected to enter the foldable-phone race. ## Huawei doubles down on its tri-fold advantage The Mate XT2 retains Huawei's unusual three-panel design but brings several hardware upgrades. At its heart is Huawei's **Kirin 9050 Pro** processor, which the company says delivers substantially higher performance while using less power than the previous generation. Huawei also redesigned the folding mechanism, improved water resistance and upgraded the camera system. The company says the new phone delivers **42 per cent better overall performance** than its predecessor based on its own testing. Another notable feature is an optional privacy display designed to make the screen difficult for people beside the user to see. The Mate XT2 uses a **10.2-inch display when fully opened**, giving the phone a tablet-like form factor while allowing it to fold into a more compact device for carrying. ## A premium price to match the technology The Mate XT2 is firmly positioned as a luxury smartphone. Prices start at **19,999 yuan (about US$2,980)** and rise to **24,999 yuan (about US$3,725)** for the highest-end version. Sales in China are scheduled to begin on **Sept. 12**. Huawei executive Richard Yu acknowledged that pricing remains a challenge, particularly as memory and component costs have risen. The company nevertheless appears willing to maintain a premium position as it competes for consumers prepared to pay more for cutting-edge hardware. ## Xiaomi enters the fight with its own foldable Huawei's launch is only the opening move in a packed week for China's smartphone industry. **Xiaomi** is also launching a new high-end foldable, the **Xiaomi 18 Fold**, which uses the company's in-house **XRing O3** processor. Xiaomi claims its new chip can outperform Apple's A19 Pro processor in certain benchmarks, while the phone is priced significantly below Huawei's Mate XT2, with reported prices ranging from **10,999 yuan to 14,999 yuan**. The competition is therefore not simply about which company can produce the most futuristic design. Price, performance, domestic chip technology and the ability to attract premium buyers in China's increasingly competitive smartphone market are all becoming important battlegrounds. ## Apple is about to enter the foldable race The biggest potential disruption, however, may come from **Apple**. Apple has historically avoided foldable smartphones while competitors such as Huawei and Samsung experimented with the category. That is expected to change with Apple's latest product cycle, as the company prepares to unveil its next generation of devices and is widely expected to introduce its first foldable iPhone. Apple's arrival could dramatically reshape the market because the company has a huge global customer base and a reputation for turning technologies that already exist elsewhere into mainstream products. Analysts therefore expect Apple's entry to put additional pressure on Huawei, Xiaomi and Samsung. ## Huawei remains the dominant foldable player in China For now, Huawei has a major advantage in its home market. According to IDC data cited by Reuters, Huawei held **68 per cent of China's foldable smartphone market in the second quarter of 2026**. Huawei also led China's overall smartphone market with a **22.6 per cent share**, ahead of Apple at 18.1 per cent and Xiaomi at 12.4 per cent. That gives Huawei considerable momentum heading into what could become one of the most competitive periods yet for premium smartphones. ## The chip battle behind the smartphone race Huawei's latest launch also carries significance beyond the design of the phone itself. The company has faced extensive US restrictions limiting its access to advanced semiconductor technology. Its continued development of its own processors has therefore become an important part of its effort to remain competitive. The Mate XT2's Kirin 9050 Pro uses Huawei's new **LogicFolding architecture**, which the company says is designed to improve efficiency and performance. The ability to produce increasingly sophisticated chips domestically could help Huawei reduce its dependence on foreign technology — although the broader semiconductor supply chain remains a major challenge for Chinese technology companies. ## Foldables move closer to the mainstream Foldable smartphones remain a relatively small portion of the overall smartphone market, but manufacturers are increasingly betting that the category can become a major premium segment. Huawei's tri-fold design offers one answer to the industry's central challenge: giving consumers a much larger screen without requiring them to carry a tablet. Xiaomi is taking a different approach, while Apple appears ready to bring its own interpretation of the technology to its enormous user base.
