Humanoid Robots Can Dance, Fight and Work—Now China Is Waiting for the One Breakthrough That Could Change Everything

BEIJING — China’s fast-growing humanoid robotics industry may be approaching a breakthrough that could transform robots from impressive demonstrations into machines capable of performing everyday tasks with little human guidance, according to Unitree founder and CEO Wang Xingxing.

Speaking at the 2026 World Robot Conference in Beijing on Aug. 20, Wang said the industry is “marching towards” a “ChatGPT moment” in embodied intelligence—a point at which robots could be placed in unfamiliar environments and successfully carry out most tasks using simple voice or text instructions.

But Wang's comments come with an important caveat: that moment has not arrived yet.

He said an important tipping point would be reached when a humanoid robot could enter an unfamiliar household and complete roughly 80% of tasks through voice or text commands. Wang described that capability as potentially triggering explosive growth across the robotics industry.

The ‘ChatGPT moment’ could still be years away

Wang offered a surprisingly cautious timeline despite the growing excitement surrounding humanoid robots.

In an optimistic scenario, he said a major advance in robot software could come within two to three years. In a less optimistic scenario, the breakthrough could take five to 10 years.

The biggest obstacle is not simply making robots walk, dance or perform martial-arts moves. It is giving them the intelligence to understand unpredictable real-world environments, make decisions and reliably complete complicated tasks.

Wang said Unitree is putting significant resources into world models, the AI systems intended to help robots understand and interact with the physical world. He acknowledged that the company is still behind in applying physical AI models to real-world situations.

That distinction is crucial. Humanoid robots can already perform spectacular movements, but performing a choreographed routine is very different from independently handling an unfamiliar household or workplace.

From viral robot performances to real-world work

Unitree has become one of the most recognizable names in China's robotics boom.

Founded in Hangzhou in 2016 by Wang Xingxing, the company initially became known for relatively affordable quadruped “robot dogs.” Its humanoid models—including the G1, H1 and R1—later gained international attention through demonstrations involving running, dancing and martial arts.

Unitree's own specifications show how quickly its hardware has developed. The company describes the G1 as a humanoid “AI avatar” equipped with 23 to 43 joint motors and AI-driven imitation and reinforcement learning capabilities.

But the industry's next challenge is considerably less glamorous: making robots useful enough to justify widespread commercial deployment.

Reuters reported that Chinese robotics companies attending this week's World Robot Conference are increasingly demonstrating robots sorting parcels, packing products and handling manufacturing tasks rather than relying solely on entertainment-focused performances.

Some robots are already being tested in industrial environments. Reuters reported that DexForce robots have been deployed at a Lens Technology factory for tasks involving mobile-phone packaging, while Robotera said it had deployed more than 100 parcel-sorting robots across 15 warehouses in China.

China’s robot race is attracting huge investor attention

The excitement surrounding embodied AI was dramatically illustrated by Unitree's recent stock-market debut.

Unitree became the first publicly traded humanoid robotics maker in mainland China after listing on Shanghai's STAR Market. Its shares initially surged as much as 629%, before closing about 460% above the IPO price at 845 yuan. The company raised approximately 6.1 billion yuan, or about US$904 million, through the offering.

Reuters reported that Unitree's retail IPO tranche was more than 8,000 times oversubscribed, underscoring the extraordinary investor appetite for China's humanoid-robotics sector.

The enthusiasm, however, is running ahead of the technology's maturity.

Unitree's shares fell about 11% on Aug. 20, according to CNA, a reminder that investors are also wrestling with the enormous gap between the industry's promise and its current capabilities.

China is already dominating humanoid-robot production

The scale of China's robotics push is significant.

According to AP, roughly 15,000 humanoid robots were shipped globally in 2025, with Unitree and fellow Chinese company AGIBOT each shipping more than 5,000 units, based on Omdia estimates. Chinese manufacturers accounted for about 18,500 humanoid-robot shipments during the first half of 2026, according to the same research group cited by AP.

Reuters has also highlighted China's extensive manufacturing ecosystem as a major advantage, with domestic supply chains supporting the production of motors, sensors, batteries and other components needed for sophisticated robots.

Yet shipment numbers alone do not mean humanoids are ready to replace workers on a massive scale.

Many robots are still being used primarily for research, education, demonstrations and pilot projects. Analysts say the real test will be whether the machines can perform reliably in commercial environments and generate enough economic value to justify their cost.

What would actually trigger the robotics boom?

For Wang, the defining breakthrough would not be another viral robot video.

It would be a robot that can walk into an unfamiliar environment, understand a human instruction and independently figure out how to accomplish the task.

That could mean telling a household robot to clean a messy room, organize objects, prepare something or perform another unfamiliar chore—without having to program the robot for every individual scenario.

Wang believes reaching roughly 80% success across everyday tasks could become the industry's equivalent of the breakthrough that ChatGPT delivered for generative AI.

Another Chinese robotics executive, Galbot founder Wang He, has offered a similar target, saying the sector could reach its own “ChatGPT moment” by 2028, when humanoids might perform around 70% to 80% of everyday tasks without specialized training.

The real race has only just begun

The robotics industry now faces a different question from the one that dominated headlines a few years ago.

It is no longer simply “Can robots walk like humans?”

The bigger question is: “Can robots think, adapt and work reliably like useful machines in the real world?”

China has rapidly expanded its manufacturing capacity and is pushing humanoid robots into factories, logistics centers and other practical environments. But technical challenges—including reliability, dexterity, endurance, safety and the ability to generalize tasks—remain major barriers to mass adoption.

For now, the much-hyped “ChatGPT moment” remains a future milestone, not a present reality.

But if Wang Xingxing and other robotics leaders are right, the next major AI revolution may not happen entirely on a computer screen.

It could walk into the room.
