# Illinois Mother Charged With Killing Toddler Had Been Closely Following Lindsay Clancy Trial

**FRANKFORT, Illinois —** An Illinois mother accused of killing her 2-year-old son had been closely following the murder trial of Massachusetts mother **Lindsay Clancy** and was discussing the case with friends just hours before her child was found dead, prosecutors said.

**Corie Walsh, 40,** faces three counts of first-degree murder after her son, **Barrett**, was discovered unresponsive in the basement of the family's home in Frankfort, southwest of Chicago, on Sept. 1.

## Mother had been discussing Clancy case

According to prosecutors, Walsh had become **“very invested”** in Clancy's nationally watched trial and was communicating with friends about the case until about **12:30 p.m.** on the day of her son's death.

A neighbour discovered Barrett less than four hours later and called emergency services while attempting CPR.

The boy was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy determined that he died from **asphyxia caused by ligature compression of the neck**, according to prosecutors.

Authorities have not alleged that Walsh's interest in the Clancy case caused or directly influenced the death.

## Walsh found injured inside home

Police responding to the home also found Walsh in a bathtub containing bloody water. Prosecutors said she had cuts to her wrists and thighs that appeared to have been self-inflicted.

She was taken to hospital for treatment, with her injuries described as not life-threatening.

Prosecutors said Walsh later told investigators that she had killed her son because she believed he was the **“devil” and the “anti-Christ.”**

Walsh's attorney, **Andrea Lyon**, said her client was experiencing a **psychotic episode** at the time and described the death as a tragedy for the entire family.

The allegations have not been proven in court, and Walsh is presumed innocent unless and until she is convicted.

## Clancy trial ended in mistrial

The disclosure about Walsh's interest in the Clancy case came only days after a Massachusetts judge declared a **mistrial** in Clancy's trial when jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict.

Clancy, a former labour and delivery nurse, was accused of killing her three young children in **January 2023**. Her defence argued that she was suffering from **postpartum psychosis** and was legally insane at the time.

Prosecutors argued that Clancy understood what she was doing and knew it was wrong.

## No evidence of a direct connection

Despite the striking timing and similarities between the two cases, authorities in Illinois have **not said that Clancy's trial played a role in Walsh's alleged actions**.

So far, publicly available evidence establishes only that Walsh had been closely following and discussing the Massachusetts case shortly before her son was found dead.

Frankfort police and prosecutors in Will County did not immediately respond to requests for comment, according to the Associated Press.

**The cases have drawn attention because of their disturbing similarities, but investigators have yet to establish any direct connection — leaving the Illinois prosecution to be determined by the evidence presented in court.**
