SINGAPORE — One of Singapore’s best-known heritage neighbourhoods is about to look very different.

A section of Joo Chiat Road will be closed to vehicular traffic for six hours on October 3, allowing residents and visitors to walk, cycle and experience the neighbourhood without the usual flow of cars.

The Joo Chiat Car-Free Day will take place from **3.30pm to 9.30pm**, with the affected stretch running between **Dunman Road and East Coast Road**, according to the Land Transport Authority.

The event is being held as part of Singapore’s World Car-Free Day 2026 activities and is being co-created with community organisations, local businesses and residents.

### A first for Singapore's car-free celebrations

The Joo Chiat event is significant because it marks the **first time an area outside Singapore's Central Business District will be closed to vehicles for the annual car-free initiative**, according to The Straits Times and other local reports.

World Car-Free Day is observed internationally around September 22 and encourages people to consider alternatives to driving, including walking, cycling and public transport.

Singapore's 2026 programme, however, will extend beyond September, with activities running from September to November.

The LTA says the broader initiative is designed to highlight the benefits of a more car-lite lifestyle, including lower carbon emissions, reduced air pollution and safer environments for walking and cycling.

### More than just a road closure

Visitors to Joo Chiat on October 3 will find much more than an empty road.

The LTA and its partners will stage interactive exhibits, sustainability showcases and family-friendly activities throughout the event.

Among the planned activities are an **Urban Sustainability Bike Tour**, Sport Singapore's **Heritage Fitness Challenge**, pickleball, rollerblading and a Heritage Dance Fitness programme themed around the rhythms of Baba Nyonya culture.

There will also be a music performance at **Marine Parade MRT Station** from 4pm to 5pm for members of the public travelling to Joo Chiat by train.

As evening arrives, the focus will shift toward the local community.

Marine Parade Grassroots, Katong Culture and the Katong-Joo Chiat Business Association will organise a community celebration featuring a **Kueh Party, local arts, children's activities and live performances** around Joo Chiat Community Club.

The Katong-Joo Chiat Business Association will also bring local businesses onto the streets through its Joo Chiat Street Social initiative, with zones for food and beverage, pet activities, fitness classes and other experiences.

### Joo Chiat's heritage takes centre stage

Organisers say the event is intended to showcase how streets can become more than transport routes.

For a few hours, the familiar road will become a space for people to gather, explore, exercise and experience the heritage character of Joo Chiat.

The neighbourhood is known for its distinctive shophouses, Peranakan heritage and lively mix of businesses, making it a natural setting for an event focused on walking, community and placemaking.

The LTA says the initiative complements longer-term efforts to encourage walking, cycling and public transport while improving connections between neighbourhoods and public transport.

### Singaporeans can also take part before the big day

The Joo Chiat event is only one part of this year's World Car-Free Day programme.

From **September 1 to November 30**, the LTA and GovTech are running **The Invisible City**, an interactive mobile experience accessible through the CrowdTaskSG platform.

Participants can complete location-based challenges by walking, cycling or taking public transport to destinations around Singapore. Completing challenges progressively reveals parts of a virtual map while introducing participants to different neighbourhoods, public spaces, heritage sites and community stories.

There is also a World Car-Free Day challenge from **September 14 to 30**. Healthy 365 users who clock at least 10,000 steps for four consecutive days during the challenge can earn a special-edition World Car-Free Day badge.

### What motorists need to know

The key point for drivers is simple: **the affected section of Joo Chiat Road will be closed to traffic from 3.30pm to 9.30pm on October 3.**

The closure covers the section between Dunman Road and East Coast Road, rather than the entire Joo Chiat neighbourhood.

The LTA has advised members of the public to use public transport when travelling to the event. Further information on the road closure arrangements and programme details will be released progressively.

For Singapore, the experiment offers a glimpse of what familiar neighbourhood streets could feel like when cars temporarily give way to people.

And for Joo Chiat, October 3 could turn a busy stretch of road into something very different — a temporary public space where heritage, food, culture, exercise and community take centre stage.
