Ogilvy Thailand Has a New Leader—But What Comes Next Could Change Everything

BANGKOK — A new chapter is beginning at Ogilvy Thailand.

The agency has appointed Mettipapan Tongton as Ogilvy Lead, succeeding longtime Chief Executive Officer Jiravara Virayavardhana, who is retiring after more than 31 years with the company. The leadership transition, effective in August 2026, comes at a pivotal moment for both the agency and its parent network, WPP, as the advertising industry undergoes rapid technological and structural change.

Tongton brings more than 18 years of experience in marketing communications to the role. Before her appointment, she served on Ogilvy's executive board and was Managing Director of Ogilvy One and T&Pm in Thailand, giving her experience across customer experience, data-driven marketing, CRM, brand management and integrated communications. Her earlier career also included a role as Client Service Director at JWT.

A Leadership Change That Signals More Than a Succession

Tongton's appointment is not simply a changing of the guard.

She takes charge as WPP pushes toward a simpler, faster and more connected operating model, with agencies increasingly expected to combine creativity, technology, data and specialist capabilities rather than operate in traditional silos. A major part of her mandate will include accelerating the use of WPP Open, the group's AI-powered operating system, while bringing together Ogilvy's strengths in brand strategy, communications, experience design and public relations.

She will work alongside Ogilvy Thailand's senior leadership team and regional and global leaders across the network, partnering closely with Chief Creative Officer Pete Thasorn Boonyanate to drive creative excellence and client growth in Thailand and beyond.

Building on Ogilvy Thailand's Creative Momentum

The transition follows a series of leadership changes and comes as Ogilvy Thailand seeks to build on its creative reputation. Boonyanate was appointed Chief Creative Officer earlier in 2026, adding another important piece to the agency's evolving leadership structure.

The agency has also continued to promote its “Borderless Creativity” approach—a model designed to connect specialist teams, technology and data around client challenges rather than keeping disciplines separated. For marketers facing increasingly fragmented consumer journeys and pressure to prove business results, that integrated proposition could become central to Ogilvy Thailand's next phase of growth.

Tongton has described the changing agency landscape as an opportunity to reinforce the value of close client partnerships, strategic depth and access to the capabilities of a global network. Her background in both traditional brand communications and technology-enabled customer experience positions her at the intersection of two forces reshaping modern advertising: creative differentiation and digital transformation.

The Big Question: Can Creativity and AI Power Ogilvy Thailand's Next Growth Story?

For the industry, the appointment will be closely watched.

Ogilvy Thailand is entering its next chapter at a time when agencies are being challenged to move faster, integrate more deeply and adapt to AI without losing the creative instincts that made their brands valuable in the first place. Tongton's task will be to preserve that creative legacy while helping the agency evolve for a more connected, technology-driven marketplace.

With a new agency lead, a relatively new creative leader and WPP's broader transformation underway, Ogilvy Thailand's leadership reset is now in motion.

And the biggest story may not be who is leaving—it may be what Tongton and her new leadership team build next.

Why This Matters

  • New leadership: Mettipapan Tongton succeeds Jiravara Virayavardhana after her more than three-decade career with Ogilvy.
  • AI becomes central: Tongton will help accelerate the adoption of WPP Open and more integrated ways of working.
  • Creative transformation: She will partner closely with CCO Pete Thasorn Boonyanate as Ogilvy Thailand pursues its next phase of creative and commercial growth.
  • Industry implications: The move reflects a broader shift across advertising toward agencies that can combine creativity, data, technology and customer experience under one connected model.
