# Phuket’s ‘Secret Beach’ Was Locked Away for Years—Now Authorities Have Moved In

**PHUKET, Thailand —** A secluded Phuket beach that was once surrounded by private tourism businesses and reportedly inaccessible without paying a fee is entering a new chapter after Thai authorities moved to clear structures they say illegally occupied protected forest land.

Officials launched a major operation at **Nui Beach in Phuket’s Karon area on July 20**, dismantling around **50 structures** as part of a government campaign to reclaim state land and restore public access to one of the island’s best-known hidden coves.

According to authorities, the operation covered approximately **18 rai of land** within the Nakkerd Hill National Forest Reserve. The land had allegedly been used for commercial tourism activities for years, with facilities and businesses built in an area the government says is legally protected forest.

## From Private Tourism Spot to Government Reclamation

The latest enforcement action follows a long-running legal and environmental dispute over Nui Beach.

Thai authorities had previously ordered occupants to remove structures from the site, initially identifying **39 buildings and other structures** on more than 15 rai of protected land. A formal removal order gave occupants until **July 9, 2026**, after which authorities could proceed with enforcement and recover demolition costs.

By July 20, the government said its operation involved the removal of **50 structures**, with more than 400 officials and personnel participating in the wider enforcement effort. Authorities said the land had been commercially exploited for tourism and that the crackdown was part of a broader effort to stop the private use of public and protected land.

The case has also been complicated by legal challenges from representatives of the occupants, who have disputed aspects of the government's actions. Officials, however, maintained that the enforcement was carried out under existing legal authority and that challenges should proceed through the courts.

## A Long Legal Battle Behind the Beach

Government agencies say the Nui Beach dispute stretches back decades. Thailand's Natural Resources and Environment Ministry said land documents covering more than 18 rai were revoked following a **2014 Supreme Court ruling**, returning the area to national forest status. Enforcement actions and legal proceedings continued in the years that followed.

The latest demolition is therefore more than just the removal of beachfront buildings—it represents one of the most visible tests yet of the government's broader campaign against alleged land encroachment in Phuket.

Officials have described the effort as part of a **“Phuket Model,”** intended to strengthen enforcement against illegal occupation of state land and potentially serve as a blueprint for action in other parts of Thailand.

## Will Nui Beach Finally Be Free to the Public?

That is now the question many residents and tourists are asking.

Thai authorities say the cleared area will eventually be restored to its natural condition and developed as a **recreation forest and ecotourism area**, with the goal of ensuring public access rather than allowing the land to be privately controlled.

But visitors hoping to head there immediately may have to wait. A recent update from Phuket-based travel publication Phuket 101 reported that the site remains closed and guarded while authorities manage the reclaimed area, with no confirmed reopening date announced.

The government has also continued patrols and cleanup operations around Nui Beach following the demolition, signaling that officials are determined to prevent new encroachment while restoration plans move forward.

### The Bigger Picture

For years, Nui Beach was marketed as one of Phuket's hidden escapes—a remote cove reached by a difficult road and surrounded by commercial facilities. Now, the story has shifted dramatically.

The demolition of dozens of structures has turned Nui Beach into a symbol of Thailand's wider debate over **public access, tourism development, environmental protection and powerful interests in one of the country's most valuable tourist destinations**.

The buildings may be gone, but the bigger question remains: **Can Phuket protect its beaches from future encroachment—and will Nui Beach truly return to the public?**

For now, authorities say that is exactly what they intend to make happen.
