# Singapore Is Moving Beyond STEM as AI Takes Over Routine Work — But What Will Tomorrow's Graduates Need Instead?

SINGAPORE — For years, STEM education has been seen as the gateway to the future.

Science. Technology. Engineering. Mathematics.

But as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly capable of writing code, processing information and automating routine tasks, Singapore's universities and tertiary institutions are placing a growing premium on something different: **creativity, critical thinking, communication, empathy, judgement and the ability to understand complex human problems.**

The result is a growing move from **STEM to STEAM**, with the "A" representing arts — alongside a broader push to integrate humanities and social sciences into technology-driven education.

And the change is already showing up in student demand.

PSB Academy said demand for STEAM education has grown **47 per cent over the past two years**, with student numbers increasing from about **3,400 in 2023 to 5,000 last year**. The trend reflects growing interest in multidisciplinary education as students prepare for a job market being rapidly reshaped by AI.

## AI Can Do More Technical Work — So What Should Humans Do?

The shift is becoming increasingly visible inside classrooms.

Tasks that once required students to spend hours writing technical instructions or lines of code can now, in some cases, be completed in minutes or even seconds with AI tools.

That does not necessarily mean technical knowledge is becoming irrelevant.

Instead, educators increasingly argue that **the value of human expertise is shifting upward**.

If AI can help produce an answer, the bigger question becomes:

**Was the right question asked in the first place?**

Singapore University of Technology and Design is among the institutions pushing that idea further.

Its education approach increasingly combines technology with disciplines such as economics, business, psychology and philosophy. The goal is not simply to add so-called "soft skills" to a technology degree, but to help students understand the people, systems and contexts behind the problems they are trying to solve.

That distinction could become crucial in the AI era.

A technically brilliant solution can still fail if it solves the wrong problem.

## Singapore's Universities Are Redesigning Education for an AI Future

The move beyond traditional STEM is not limited to one institution.

In August, Singapore Management University announced new courses for the 2026/27 academic year spanning AI, sustainability, law, psychology, business, technology and the arts. Some courses deliberately cross traditional academic boundaries, including opportunities for students from different disciplines to explore Singapore's history and society through dance.

SMU's approach reflects a larger rethink underway across higher education: **technical fluency alone may no longer be enough.**

Meanwhile, the National University of Singapore's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has also argued that AI could make the humanities and social sciences more important rather than less important, particularly when society needs to understand how technology influences culture, assumptions, decision-making and human behaviour.

Singapore is also putting serious resources behind the sector.

Earlier this year, Education Minister Desmond Lee announced a **S$556 million investment over five years to strengthen social science and humanities research**, underscoring the government's view that these disciplines remain strategically important as Singapore navigates technological disruption and geopolitical uncertainty.

## The Big Shift: From Knowing How to Do Something to Knowing Whether It Should Be Done

This may be the biggest change emerging from the AI revolution.

For decades, education often rewarded the ability to find the correct answer.

But AI can now generate answers almost instantly.

The new challenge is determining whether those answers are accurate, useful, ethical and appropriate.

That requires skills that go far beyond operating a machine.

Employers increasingly want workers who can analyse information, exercise judgement, communicate insights and collaborate with others to turn ideas into action, according to educators and industry leaders interviewed by CNA.

In other words, the future workforce may need people who can do what AI cannot reliably do alone:

- Understand human behaviour
- Frame problems correctly
- Challenge assumptions
- Make ethical judgements
- Communicate complex ideas
- Build consensus
- Lead teams
- Adapt to unexpected situations

## Singapore Is Not Abandoning STEM — It Is Expanding It

The growing emphasis on arts and social sciences does **not** mean Singapore is turning away from science and technology.

In fact, the country is simultaneously strengthening AI education.

From 2027, all students in Singapore's institutes of higher learning — including universities, polytechnics and the Institute of Technical Education — are expected to learn AI skills tailored to their fields of study.

The strategy appears to be moving toward a different kind of graduate.

Not someone who chooses between technology and humanity.

But someone who understands both.

SUTD's expanded Design and Artificial Intelligence programme, for example, explicitly integrates technology with social sciences and human-centred problem-solving, reflecting the growing demand for graduates who can combine technical capability with an understanding of people and society.

## Why the Arts May Become More Valuable in the Age of Machines

The renewed focus on the arts is also about developing abilities that are difficult to reduce to a formula.

At SMU, a dance choreography course is being used not simply to teach performance, but to explore Singapore's culture, identity and multiculturalism while developing creativity and empathy.

That may sound far removed from artificial intelligence.

But educators increasingly see the connection.

As machines become better at generating content, processing data and completing predictable tasks, people may become more valuable for their ability to interpret meaning.

To understand context.

To recognise what matters.

And to ask questions that a machine might never think to ask.

## Adult Learners Are Also Racing to Adapt

The education shift is not just affecting students entering university for the first time.

CNA reported that institutions serving working professionals are also seeing growing demand for programmes involving AI literacy, leadership, business transformation and practical problem-solving.

At EHL Hospitality Business School, courses taken by working professionals rose by nearly 40 per cent year on year, while other institutions are moving away from exam-heavy models toward assignments based on real business challenges.

That reflects a wider concern among workers:

**If AI can automate parts of my job, what skills should I build next?**

Singapore's education sector increasingly appears to have an answer.

Learn the technology.

But also learn everything around it.

## The New Formula for the AI Generation

The future may no longer belong exclusively to the best coder, engineer or data scientist.

It could belong to the person who can combine technical knowledge with human understanding.

The engineer who can explain an innovation.

The programmer who understands psychology.

The AI specialist who understands ethics.

The business leader who can interpret machine-generated information without blindly trusting it.

And the creative thinker who can spot a problem before anyone else — including the machine.

Singapore's move toward STEAM suggests the country's education system is preparing for a future where the question is no longer simply:

**"Can we build it?"**

But something much more important:

**"Should we build it — and who are we building it for?"**

As AI becomes more powerful, that may be the question that determines who stays ahead.

And Singapore's universities appear to be betting that the answer will require something technology alone cannot provide.
