Singapore’s Panda Stars Get a Special Send-Off as a New Immersive Experience Opens—But There’s a Bigger Reason to Visit Now
SINGAPORE — Giant panda fans have another reason to head to River Wonders this September as Singapore prepares to host its first-ever Panda Planet Immersive Experience, bringing visitors deeper into the world of giant pandas through interactive exhibits, virtual experiences and conservation stories.
The limited-time attraction will run from September 4 to 14, 2026, making it a timely destination for families and wildlife enthusiasts during the September school holiday period.
Presented by iPanda, a multimedia and live-broadcasting platform dedicated to giant pandas by CCTV.com, the experience is making its first stop outside China in Singapore. It will be located outside the Pavilion Capital Giant Panda Forest at River Wonders.
Three zones put pandas in the spotlight
The Panda Planet Immersive Experience is divided into three themed zones, combining education, technology and personal stories about Singapore's beloved panda residents.
The Giant Panda Science Zone explores the animals’ evolution, behaviour and unusual adaptations, offering visitors a closer look at what makes giant pandas so distinctive.
Visitors can then step into the MR Experience Zone, where an interactive virtual experience provides a glimpse into the giant panda's natural ecosystem.
The third area, the Kai Kai & Jia Jia Birthday Zone, focuses on Singapore's resident panda pair and includes facts about the two animals, along with an update on their famous cub, Le Le.
Interactive trivia challenges and photo opportunities are also part of the experience, giving visitors more than just a traditional wildlife exhibition.
The timing is significant for Singapore’s panda fans
The exhibition arrives during a particularly meaningful month for River Wonders.
Jia Jia turned 18 on September 3, while Kai Kai will celebrate his 19th birthday on September 14. River Wonders will mark the occasions with special enrichment activities.
Jia Jia's birthday celebration is scheduled for September 5, while Kai Kai's will take place on September 13. The pandas will receive specially prepared gift boxes filled with favourite treats, designed not only as birthday enrichment but also to encourage natural foraging behaviours and mental stimulation.
For visitors, that makes the September programme more than a photo opportunity—it is also a chance to see how the panda care team uses enrichment to support the animals' wellbeing.
And there is another reason this September matters
The celebrations come with an emotional backdrop.
Kai Kai and Jia Jia arrived in Singapore from China in 2012 under a 10-year conservation and research agreement. In 2022, their stay was extended for another five years, keeping the pair at River Wonders until 2027.
That means this year's birthday celebrations could be among the final major birthday events for the pair before their planned return to China.
The Straits Times reported that the pandas are scheduled to return to China in 2027, adding significance to what may be one of the later opportunities for Singapore visitors to celebrate the pair while they remain at River Wonders.
What happened to Singapore’s first panda cub?
The Panda Planet experience will also revisit the story of Le Le, the first giant panda cub born in Singapore.
Le Le was born to Jia Jia and Kai Kai on August 14, 2021, following efforts involving artificial insemination. He became Singapore's first locally born giant panda.
But visitors should not expect to see him at River Wonders today.
Le Le was returned to China in January 2024 after reaching the age of independence, where he became part of China's giant panda conservation programme. His return was consistent with the conservation arrangements surrounding pandas born overseas under China's international panda cooperation programmes.
His story remains part of Singapore's panda legacy—and the new exhibition gives visitors an opportunity to revisit that chapter.
More than an attraction, it is a conservation story
While the cute factor is likely to drive much of the attention online, the exhibition also puts conservation at the centre of the experience.
Giant pandas are currently classified as Vulnerable, rather than Endangered, following decades of conservation work, habitat protection and breeding efforts. Mandai says the work involving Kai Kai and Jia Jia contributes to broader knowledge and conservation efforts for the species.
River Wonders' Pavilion Capital Giant Panda Forest itself was designed to recreate elements of the pandas' natural environment. The climate-controlled facility covers about 1,500 square metres and incorporates vegetation, rocks and water features intended to provide a stimulating environment for the animals.
How to visit
The Panda Planet Immersive Experience runs from September 4 to 14, 2026, and entry to the exhibition is included with admission to River Wonders.
According to Mandai Wildlife Reserve, River Wonders is open daily from 9am to 6pm, with last entry at 5pm. Current non-resident admission is listed at S$45 for adults and S$33 for children, while Singapore residents can access discounted rates through WildPass.
Every admission ticket during the promotion also comes with a S$5 retail voucher and S$5 F&B voucher, subject to the stated minimum-spend requirements.
For Singapore's panda lovers, the message is simple: September is shaping up to be a particularly special month at River Wonders—and with Jia Jia and Kai Kai's stay currently set to end in 2027, this year's celebrations carry a little more weight than usual.
