Taipei Firefighters Unveil 3-Second Rescue Mat That Could Transform Emergency Evacuations
TAIPEI — In a fire emergency, every second can mean the difference between reaching a trapped victim in time and arriving too late.
Taipei City firefighters have developed a lightweight inflatable rescue mat designed to make the difficult job of moving injured or mobility-impaired people through dangerous, confined spaces faster and less physically demanding.
The 2.8-kilogram rescue mat can be deployed and inflated in about three seconds, according to the Taipei City Fire Department, which recently received the highest honor in the Taipei City Government’s innovation proposal competition for the invention.
The device was developed by frontline firefighters who identified a recurring problem during emergency operations: rescuers often have to transport victims through narrow areas, stairways, high-rise buildings and crowded locations while carrying more than 25 kilograms of firefighting equipment.
A rescue tool built for seconds that matter
The new equipment, known as a fire-scene rescue transport mat, can be folded and stored on a firefighter's self-contained breathing apparatus, or SCBA, carrying frame.
When needed, firefighters can wrap and secure an injured person before rapidly inflating the mat.
Its exterior uses fire-resistant, tear-resistant fabric, while the mat incorporates approximately 5 centimeters of padding designed to reduce friction during transportation. The design allows firefighters to drag victims more easily across floors, stairs and around fire hoses.
The department says the equipment can be used for both horizontal and vertical movement, potentially reducing the physical burden placed on firefighters during lengthy rescue operations.
That matters because firefighters working inside a burning structure may already be operating under extreme conditions, including smoke, darkness, heat, restricted visibility and limited maneuvering space.
Less strain on rescuers, more focus on victims
Beyond speeding up evacuation, Taipei officials say the invention could help reduce muscle strain and the risk of occupational injuries among firefighters.
Traditional victim-carrying techniques can require substantial physical effort, particularly when a rescue involves a long distance or difficult stairway. By allowing rescuers to drag rather than fully carry some victims, the new system is intended to conserve energy during critical operations.
The department's underlying goal is straightforward: reduce the physical burden on rescuers so they can concentrate on getting victims out of danger.
Taiwan News reported that the department believes reducing firefighter fatigue can ultimately improve the chances of survival for people requiring evacuation.
The technology could go beyond fire scenes
Perhaps the most significant part of the project is that Taipei is already considering applications outside firefighting.
Officials said the rescue mat could potentially be adapted for hospitals and long-term care facilities, particularly for evacuating bedridden elderly people and others with limited mobility during emergencies.
That could make the invention useful not only during fires but also during other situations where large numbers of vulnerable people must be moved quickly from buildings.
Taipei's aging population also gives the technology a potential role in broader emergency-preparedness efforts.
A frontline solution to a real-world problem
The project stands out because it was not simply conceived as a laboratory technology. It came directly from firefighters confronting the practical difficulties of emergency rescue.
The Taipei City Fire Department said frontline personnel used their operational experience to identify problems and develop equipment capable of functioning in smoke-filled, dark and confined environments.
CNA likewise reported that the firefighters' invention won the "Excellence in Improvement" top prize in Taipei's municipal creative proposal competition.
The department said it plans to continue encouraging frontline personnel to identify problems encountered during operations and develop new solutions that can improve rescue efficiency and firefighter safety.
The three-second deployment time may sound small, but in an emergency evacuation, that is precisely the point.
A rescue tool that weighs just 2.8 kilograms, fits onto a firefighter's existing gear and can be deployed within seconds could give rescuers another crucial option when carrying a victim is difficult or dangerous.
And if Taipei succeeds in expanding the technology into hospitals and long-term care facilities, the invention could eventually prove useful far beyond the fireground.
