TAIWAN ENTERS THE QUANTUM RACE AS NEXT-GENERATION COMPUTING TAKES CENTER STAGE
Taiwan is positioning itself for the next major computing revolution as quantum technology takes a prominent role at SEMICON Taiwan 2026.
The Taipei Times highlighted a 64-qubit superconducting quantum computer displayed by Fujitsu at the semiconductor exhibition in Taipei, underscoring how the industry is moving beyond conventional silicon computing toward quantum systems.
The timing is significant. SEMICON Taiwan 2026 has established a dedicated Quantum Technology Zone featuring superconducting qubits, ion traps, silicon-spin qubits, quantum annealing and cryogenic technologies. Organizers say quantum technologies could enter the early stages of commercial deployment before 2030.
Fujitsu is also pushing toward larger quantum systems. The company says it and RIKEN developed a 64-qubit system in 2023 and a 256-qubit system in 2025, with a 1,024-qubit system planned for 2026.
Taiwan is looking to turn its existing semiconductor expertise into an advantage in this emerging field. Academia Sinica is showcasing work on fault-tolerant quantum computing, including an 8-inch semiconductor-compatible fabrication line for superconducting quantum processors and facilities for testing and developing quantum hardware.
The country’s technology companies are also moving early. Recent industry reporting says major Taiwanese firms including Hon Hai, Quanta and Wistron are exploring different quantum-computing approaches, while Taiwan is seeking to develop a broader quantum manufacturing and supply-chain ecosystem.
The shift could be strategically important because quantum computing is expected to complement, rather than simply replace, today’s AI infrastructure. Quantum systems could eventually tackle highly complex problems in areas such as drug discovery, materials science, financial modeling and advanced optimization.
For Taiwan, the opportunity is bigger than building a quantum computer. Its established strengths in chip fabrication, advanced packaging, electronics and precision manufacturing could allow local companies to become suppliers for a future global quantum industry.
The race is still in its early stages, but Taiwan is making it clear that it does not want to be left behind when the next computing era arrives.
