# Taiwan Is Turning Agricultural Waste Into Yarn, Fuel and New Products as Net-Zero Push Accelerates

**TAIPEI — What if agricultural waste could become a source of new products instead of ending up in landfills or being burned and discarded? Taiwan is increasingly betting on that idea.**

The island is expanding efforts to transform agricultural and fishery waste into commercially useful materials, from **textile fibers made with discarded oyster shells to biomass fuel produced from farm pruning**, as the government pushes toward its long-term net-zero agriculture goals.

Taiwan's Ministry of Agriculture says the initiative has already helped develop **49 products made from agricultural waste**, with **19 companies participating** and combined business investment reaching about **NT$320 million (US$10 million)**. The program has generated roughly **NT$150 million (US$4.7 million) in output** so far.

The figures highlight a broader shift in Taiwan's environmental strategy: waste is increasingly being treated not simply as something to dispose of, but as a potential **industrial resource**.

## From Oyster Shells to “Green” Yarn

One of the most striking examples involves something that would normally be considered seafood waste: **discarded oyster shells**.

A textile company in Tainan has developed yarn incorporating powdered oyster shells together with recycled plastic bottles, creating functional fibers that can be used in textile products.

The concept is not entirely new, but Taiwan has spent years building an industrial ecosystem around it.

Taipei Times reported that Taiwanese textile entrepreneur Eddie Wang developed **Seawool**, a fabric made using oyster-shell material and recycled PET. The company uses roughly 100 tonnes of oyster shells annually to produce about 900 tonnes of Seawool, with the resulting fabric sold to brands in Europe and the United States.

The scale of the underlying waste problem is significant.

Taiwan produces an estimated **160,000 tonnes of discarded oyster shells each year**, according to data cited by Taipei Times. In coastal communities, accumulated shells have historically created odor, storage and environmental problems.

Now, some of that waste is being transformed into a raw material.

## The Shells Are Becoming More Than Just Fabric

Oyster shells are also being processed into useful materials for agriculture and manufacturing.

Taiwan Sugar Corporation has invested in a dedicated facility that processes discarded shells into calcium carbonate and other powdered materials.

The resulting materials can be used in products including **fertilizer and animal feed**, while researchers and companies have explored additional applications such as antibacterial plastics, 3D-printing materials, soaps, cat litter and other industrial products.

Taiwan Sugar says its facility can process up to **50,000 tonnes of discarded oyster shells annually**, producing approximately **40,000 tonnes of calcium carbonate**.

That creates a double benefit: reducing waste while potentially reducing reliance on traditionally mined or imported sources of calcium carbonate.

## Farm Branches Become Fuel

The circular-economy push extends well beyond oyster farming.

In Tainan, a dried-longan farm is using **pruned branches and other dry wood from its agricultural operations to produce biomass pellets**.

Those pellets are then burned as fuel to help dry longan, allowing material generated on the farm to be returned to the production cycle instead of simply being discarded.

That approach illustrates the broader principle behind Taiwan's agricultural circular economy: **keep resources moving through the production system for as long as possible.**

Instead of treating every leftover material as waste, farmers and companies can potentially convert it into fuel, fertilizer, construction material, textiles or industrial inputs.

## Taiwan's Net-Zero Agriculture Strategy Began in 2022

Taiwan's Agriculture Ministry launched its strategy for reducing agricultural emissions in **2022**, with a target of achieving net-zero emissions in the agricultural sector by **2040**.

But reducing agricultural emissions involves much more than finding new uses for waste.

Agriculture produces greenhouse gases through fertilizer use, livestock, rice cultivation, energy consumption and changes in land use.

The government is therefore also examining ways to reduce **methane emissions from rice cultivation and livestock manure**, as well as **nitrous oxide emissions associated with fertilizer use**.

That is particularly important because nitrogen fertilizer can generate nitrous oxide when excess nitrogen moves through agricultural soils.

According to Taiwan's Agricultural Technology Research Institute, nitrous oxide has a far greater warming effect than carbon dioxide.

## Agriculture Still Produces Billions of Kilograms of Emissions

Despite the progress, Taiwan's agricultural sector remains a source of significant greenhouse-gas emissions.

The country's agriculture sector emitted approximately **6.5 billion kilograms of carbon-dioxide equivalent in 2024**, accounting for around **2.38% of Taiwan's total emissions**, according to figures cited from the Climate Change Administration.

That means waste-to-product initiatives alone will not deliver net-zero agriculture.

They are one component of a much larger transition involving farming methods, fertilizer management, livestock practices, energy use and resource efficiency.

## Taiwan Already Has a Growing Circular-Economy Ecosystem

The agricultural-waste program builds on an existing network of companies and researchers working to commercialize materials that were previously thrown away.

Taiwan's national development strategy has identified agricultural, livestock and fishery waste as resources that can be reused through technologies including **biogas production, composting, biomass applications and material recycling**.

The oyster-shell industry is one of the clearest examples.

Taiwan Sugar's processing operation has helped turn discarded shells into calcium-based materials, while private textile companies have incorporated shell powder into recycled fibers.

That combination of government support, research institutions and private-sector investment is helping create what could become a scalable circular supply chain.

## The Bigger Opportunity Is Economic

Taiwan's agricultural-waste strategy isn't only about reducing emissions.

There is also a potentially lucrative economic opportunity.

Waste materials that once required disposal can become **raw materials for new products**, creating additional revenue streams for businesses and potentially increasing the value captured from agricultural production.

The government's latest figures suggest that this model is beginning to move beyond laboratory experiments: 49 products have already been developed, while 19 companies have invested hundreds of millions of New Taiwan dollars in the effort.

The challenge now is scaling those products beyond individual projects.

A successful circular economy requires reliable collection systems, processing facilities, consistent raw-material quality and customers willing to buy recycled or upcycled products.

## From “Waste” to Resource

Taiwan's experiment offers a glimpse of how agriculture could change as governments face growing pressure to reduce emissions while maintaining food production.

A discarded oyster shell can become textile material.

A farm branch can become fuel.

Other agricultural residues can potentially become fertilizers, packaging, construction materials or industrial inputs.

The idea is deceptively simple: **the waste from one part of the agricultural system becomes the resource for another.**

Taiwan is now trying to turn that concept into an industry.

And if the strategy succeeds, the biggest transformation may not be what farmers produce — but **what they stop throwing away.**
