# Thailand’s ‘Jurassic Park’ Is Revealing Dinosaur Secrets — And Scientists Say The Biggest Discoveries May Still Be Buried

KHON KAEN, Thailand — Thailand is becoming an unexpected center of dinosaur research, as paleontologists uncover fossils that are filling crucial gaps in the evolutionary history of dinosaurs in Southeast Asia.

Across the country’s northeastern provinces, particularly Khon Kaen, Kalasin and Chaiyaphum, scientists have identified an extraordinary concentration of dinosaur remains. The discoveries are providing new clues about animals that lived tens of millions of years ago — including giant long-necked herbivores that once dominated the region.

Researchers at Mahasarakham University and other institutions say the fossil record from northeastern Thailand is particularly valuable because it covers a period around the transition between the Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous, roughly 140 million years ago.

That geological window is still poorly understood in many parts of Asia.

“Our local dinosaurs are like missing jigsaw pieces,” paleontologist Suravech Suteethorn said, explaining that Thai fossils can help establish evolutionary connections that are difficult to trace elsewhere.

## Two major dinosaur discoveries in 2026

The latest surge in interest follows the formal identification of two remarkable dinosaurs.

One is Nagatitan chaiyaphumensis, a gigantic sauropod discovered in Chaiyaphum Province. Researchers estimate it reached around 27 meters in length and weighed approximately 25 to 28 tonnes, making it the largest known dinosaur from Southeast Asia. The scientific description was published in Scientific Reports in May 2026.

Nagatitan lived during the Cretaceous Period, roughly 113 million years ago. Its remains included vertebrae, ribs, pelvic bones and limb bones, including a humerus measuring about 1.78 meters.

Scientists believe the massive herbivore was a bulk feeder, consuming large quantities of vegetation. Its enormous size likely provided significant protection against predators.

Then came another important discovery.

In July, researchers formally described Uragasaurus kalasinensis, the first scientifically named mamenchisaurid dinosaur from Thailand. The long-necked sauropod lived during the Late Jurassic and expands the known geographic range of the mamenchisaurid group into mainland Southeast Asia.

The discovery is particularly significant because mamenchisaurids were previously known mainly from East Asia, especially China. Uragasaurus therefore provides evidence that these long-necked dinosaurs had a much wider distribution than the fossil record had previously shown.

## Why northeastern Thailand matters

Thailand’s dinosaur-rich landscape is not simply a matter of luck.

Northeastern Thailand contains extensive sedimentary rock formations of the right age and type to preserve dinosaur remains. Its relatively dry environment can also leave fossil-bearing rock exposed, making some deposits easier for researchers to investigate.

The region’s fossil record includes dinosaurs, pterosaurs, crocodile relatives, fish and other prehistoric animals, allowing scientists to reconstruct entire ancient ecosystems rather than studying dinosaurs in isolation.

That makes Thailand particularly valuable for understanding how prehistoric animals moved between what are now China, Southeast Asia and other parts of the ancient world.

## The fossil rush is only beginning

One of the most intriguing aspects of Thailand’s dinosaur boom is how much remains undiscovered.

Researchers working at Phu Wiang National Park in Khon Kaen are continuing excavations, including a site where paleontologists Varavudh Suteethorn and his son Suravech Suteethorn are carefully exposing a large fossilized neck.

Scientists have not yet confirmed what the specimen represents.

But researchers say it could become another important addition to Thailand’s growing dinosaur record.

Many fossils already identified in Thailand also spent years waiting to be properly studied. Some specimens were excavated a decade or more ago but required detailed preparation, comparison and scientific analysis before researchers could determine exactly what species they represented.

That means the next major dinosaur discovery may not necessarily come from a newly opened excavation. It could already be sitting inside a museum or research collection, waiting for scientists to recognize its significance.

## From fossils to tourism

Thailand’s dinosaur discoveries are also changing the economic and tourism profile of the northeastern region.

Museums such as the Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum in Khon Kaen and the Sirindhorn Museum in Kalasin have helped turn paleontology into an educational and tourism attraction.

The growing interest comes as Thailand marks 50 years since the discovery of its first dinosaur fossil in the Phu Wiang Valley in 1976\. Government-backed initiatives are increasingly linking fossil conservation, scientific research, museums and regional tourism.

The country's growing dinosaur identity could give the relatively rural northeastern provinces another major tourism draw beyond Thailand's traditional beaches, temples and food destinations.

## What the fossils can tell us about evolution

The importance of these discoveries goes far beyond finding enormous bones.

Nagatitan, for example, belongs to a group of sauropods with highly specialized skeletons containing internal air spaces that helped reduce the weight of their enormous bodies. Its discovery adds to scientists’ understanding of how these dinosaurs diversified in Asia and how their body sizes changed as Earth's climate and ecosystems evolved.

Uragasaurus provides a different piece of the puzzle.

The new species was identified from a distinctive dorsal vertebra and was recovered from the Phu Kradung Formation. Phylogenetic analysis places it within Mamenchisauridae, although the researchers caution that its exact position within the group remains weakly supported because only limited anatomical material is available.

Together, discoveries like these help scientists reconstruct prehistoric migration routes, evolutionary relationships and environmental changes across Asia.

## Scientists still need more support

Despite the international importance of Thailand’s fossils, paleontological research remains a relatively small field with limited resources.

Excavating fossils in remote areas is expensive, while preparing, scanning, preserving and studying specimens can take years.

Researchers say many fossils remain hidden underground, particularly in northeastern Thailand, and additional discoveries could substantially expand the country's dinosaur record.

Thailand's dinosaur story, in other words, is far from finished.

For decades, the country was better known internationally for beaches and tropical tourism. Now, beneath the soil of its northeastern provinces, scientists are uncovering evidence of a prehistoric world that existed more than 100 million years before modern Thailand.

And somewhere beneath those rocks may be the fossil that reveals the next missing piece of the dinosaur evolution puzzle.
