Woman Vanishes in Seoul, Then Police Find Her Dead Inside a Paju Café Freezer — What Led Her There?
A missing-person case in South Korea has turned into a homicide investigation after a woman in her 60s was found dead inside a refrigerated storage unit at a café in Paju, Gyeonggi Province.
Police arrested the café's male operator, in his 30s, as a suspect after tracing the woman's mobile phone and locating her at the establishment. Investigators are now working to determine exactly what happened before her death and whether a gift-certificate transaction was connected to the case.
Missing woman traced to Paju café
According to police reports cited by Yonhap and Korean media, the woman's family reported her missing in Seoul shortly after midnight on September 4.
Investigators used her mobile-phone location data to trace her movements. At approximately 2 p.m. that same day, police located her body inside a refrigerated container or freezer storage area at a café in Munsan-eup, Paju.
The café operator, a man in his 30s, was identified as a suspect because investigators believe he was with the woman around the time she disappeared. Police subsequently arrested him in Seoul.
Police believe the woman may have been confined inside the refrigerated storage area, but the precise circumstances and cause of death remain under investigation.
A meeting over gift certificates raises new questions
The investigation took another turn after authorities reportedly discovered counterfeit department-store gift certificates at the café.
Seoul Economic Daily reported that the woman and the suspect were believed to have met for the first time over a deal involving gift certificates. Police are investigating whether that transaction was connected to the woman's death.
SBS also reported that investigators found counterfeit gift certificates with a combined face value reaching tens of billions of won at the location. However, authorities have not established that the counterfeit certificates were directly responsible for the woman's death.
That distinction is important: the gift certificates are part of the investigation, not proof of a motive.
Police still investigating how the woman died
Authorities have yet to establish whether the woman was killed before being placed inside the freezer or whether she died after being confined there.
The Korea Herald reported that an autopsy is expected to help determine the circumstances surrounding her death. Police are also examining the relationship between the victim and the suspect and the events leading up to her disappearance.
The café was reportedly closed after the incident, with employees told not to report for work.
The investigation could go beyond the death
