Davao City Launches 63rd Fish Conservation Week With Coastal Protection Drive
DAVAO CITY, Philippines — The Davao City Government is rolling out a series of coastal protection, fishery enforcement and community training activities as it marks the 63rd Fish Conservation Week (FishCon Week) beginning September 14.
The activities are being organized by the City Agriculturist Office’s (CagrO) Fishery Resources Management and Services Division in partnership with the City Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Management Council (CFARMC).
Focus on marine ecosystems and responsible fishing
This year’s celebration carries the national theme, “Lusay, Corales, at Bakawan Yaman ng Karagatan Masaganang Buhay ng Pamayanan,” emphasizing the importance of healthy marine ecosystems to coastal livelihoods and responsible fishing practices.
CagrO Fisheries Division Acting Division Chief Aimee C. Evora also highlighted the importance of registering fishing equipment and boats under the city’s newly launched registration system.
Coastal patrols and fisherfolk training
The weeklong activities will begin on September 14 with a flag-raising ceremony in front of Davao City Hall.
On September 15, joint enforcement teams will conduct a seaborne patrol operation and information drive across the city’s coastal waters to promote compliance with fishery regulations.
Fishery post-harvest technology training will also be conducted on September 16 in Barangay Bato, Toril, teaching fish pond operators and local producers techniques for adding value to their products.
Earlier training sessions are scheduled in Barangay Callawa on September 9 and Barangay Talomo River in Calinan on September 10.
Mangrove planting and coastal cleanup
On September 17, the CFARMC will lead a mangrove planting and coastal cleanup activity in Tambungon, Barangay Lasang, along with a culmination activity.
The city will also conduct Fishery Law Enforcement and Basic Life Support training from September 21 to 28 at The Ritz Hotel for enforcement teams and bantay-dagat volunteers.
Evora said basic life support skills are particularly important for bantay-dagat personnel who may need to provide first aid during emergencies along the coastline.
Protecting both marine resources and communities
The activities reflect Davao City’s broader effort to combine fishery regulation with environmental protection and community preparedness.
As the city celebrates Fish Conservation Week, the message is clear: protecting the sea means protecting the livelihoods, food sources and communities that depend on it.
