MANCHESTER, England — Manchester City maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season, but only after surviving a major scare from newly promoted Coventry City in a tense 1-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
Erling Haaland’s first-half header proved to be the difference, giving City their third consecutive league win under new manager Enzo Maresca.
However, the scoreline failed to tell the full story.
Coventry created several dangerous opportunities and came within inches of earning what would have been their first top-flight point in 25 years, only for City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to produce crucial saves late in the match.
Haaland Delivers Again
Haaland continued his impressive start to the season by scoring for the third consecutive Premier League match.
The Norwegian striker found the net midway through the first half after City finally began to take control of a match that had started with Coventry looking surprisingly dangerous.
New signing Enzo Fernandez played a key role in the move, feeding Antoine Semenyo down the right flank before the winger delivered a cross for Haaland to head home at the back post.
The goal gave City the lead, but it did not bring the control many inside the Etihad expected.
Haaland later came close to scoring a second, but Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth denied him before halftime.
Record Spending Brings New Faces to City
The victory came during the early stages of a major new era at Manchester City.
Maresca has overseen a massive rebuild following Pep Guardiola’s decade in charge, with the club spending a record £460 million (US$622 million) during the transfer window.
Fernandez and Iliman Ndiaye were among the latest arrivals to feature.
Fernandez was initially expected to begin the match on the bench after completing a reported £125 million move from Chelsea, but an injury to Nico O’Reilly during the warm-up forced him into the starting lineup.
Ndiaye was also handed his City debut as Maresca deployed an attacking lineup featuring Haaland, Semenyo and Rayan Cherki.
Despite the expensive new-look squad, City struggled to dominate a determined Coventry side.
Coventry Miss Golden Chances
Coventry arrived at the Etihad without scoring in their opening three defeats since returning to the Premier League after more than two decades away from the top flight.
Yet Frank Lampard’s side nearly produced a stunning breakthrough.
Donnarumma made an early mistake when he miscontrolled a back-pass, but recovered just in time to clear the ball from danger with only inches to spare.
Taiwo Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni also missed promising opportunities before City eventually found their rhythm.
The visitors continued to threaten throughout the match and refused to be intimidated by the Premier League giants.
For long periods, Coventry looked capable of producing one of the biggest shocks of the season.
Donnarumma Saves City in Nervy Finish
City’s inability to score a second goal left the hosts vulnerable.
Coventry pushed forward in search of an equalizer and nearly found one late in the match.
Donnarumma was forced into two crucial saves to deny Loum Tchaouna and Ellis Simms, preserving City’s narrow lead and preventing a historic result for the visitors.
The late pressure left Maresca relieved to hear the final whistle.
“Nine out of 10 times in this kind of game at the end you finish conceding,” Maresca said.
“But the way we suffered together until the end, defending throw-ins, set-pieces, was good. Not all wins are going to be nice wins.”
Perfect Start, but Questions Remain
Manchester City now have three wins from three Premier League matches and remain perfect under Maresca.
However, the performance against Coventry showed that the club’s expensive rebuild will take time to fully develop.
City possess an impressive collection of attacking talent, and Haaland remains one of the most dangerous scorers in world football.
But against a newly promoted side still searching for its first goal of the season, the hosts were far from convincing.
Coventry, meanwhile, will take encouragement despite another defeat.
Lampard’s side created enough chances to earn a result and pushed one of the league’s biggest clubs to the limit.
For Manchester City, the result matters most.
The perfect start continues, Haaland keeps scoring and three more points are secured — but Coventry’s fearless performance showed that City’s new era is still very much a work in progress.
